Between 5K and 10K the race started to take shape. After the pack cruised through the first 5K in 23:18, the pace quickened considerably. How many times have coaches said to go out conservatively and then pick it up? It clearly seems like that's what the pros do.
Once the pace accelerated, the large pack scattered. Kaniskina took charge and started putting distance between her and the field. Plazter did all she could do to hold on, while everyone else jockeyed for position behind.
