Jonathan Matthews arrived on the national race walking scene in 1992 at the age of 36, after earlier competitive running and National Team bicycle racing careers. Serving as his own coach, in the eight years between 1992 and 2000 (aside from an injury-hampered 1996 season), Jonathan placed in the top 3 in the U.S. National Championships in at least one (and often both) of the two Olympic-distance walks for men, 20 Kilometers and 50 Kilometers. During this eight-year period he won 3 National Championships and set 4 American Records (the fastest American ever at 3000 meters, 5000 meters, and 1 hour on the track and 5K on the road) and 22 Masters American Records. Representing the USA in international competition, Jonathan has been the top American finisher in his event in the Pan American Race walking Cup (twice), the World Cup of race walking, and the World Athletics Championships. Jonathan is also a two-time Olympic Festival champion. In 1993 Jonathan won USA Track and Field’s Ron Zinn Award, recognizing him as the top American race walker for the year at 50 kilometers. In 1996 and 1999, Jonathan received USA Track & Field's Master race walker of the Year award.
His wife of 15 years, Stephanie, and he have two young sons, Kyle, 8, and Connor, 5. Since receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1994, Jonathan has worked as a college professor. He greatly enjoys his current position as a professor of education and the director of educator licensure and student teaching at Carroll College in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Helena, Montana.
