Fournier learned to walk as part of the New York High School program, where the race walk was an event in Track and Field. Combining race walking and running since his freshman year, Fournier had a lot of early success in high school.  He won the NY State meet as well as the High School Indoor Easterns.

Fournier went to the University of Wisconsin, Parkside on a scholarship. He ran cross country in the fall and race walked the rest of the year. His freshman year he finished 2nd at the US Junior Nationals and qualified for the World Junior Championships.  A 4 time All-American, he won the NAIA nationals his senior year.

Fournier qualified for two World Cup Teams (L'Hospitalet, Sp in 89,  San Jose 91), the Goodwill Games (1990), as well as three Olympic Trials 1988, 1992, and 1996.

Fournier gave up walking when after training for 6 weeks and finishing third at the US Nationals, he was told to quit his job and train full-time or give up race walking.  He gave up the latter.  Fournier now works at the NY Power authority as Utility Worker.
