Before the start of the race, one athlete dubbed it the "geriatric race." While the large number of masters race walkers in the trials is a testament to the longevity of the sport, the future of race walking is in the feet of the younger athletes. Yariv Pomeranz could be one of those that help shape the sport's future. A bright rising star a number of years ago, Pomeranz popped on the scene with promise, only as many to disappear. He re-emerged last year to achieve a qualifying standard for the Olympic Trials and had hopes of a strong finish. Sadly the distance took its toll and his technique broke down. A few hundred meters from the finish line Pomeranz was informed he had received his third disqualification card and was out of the race.
