2008 50km USA Race Walk - Olympic Trials Photo Story

When John Soucheck first learned to race walk in high school back in 1981 he had no thoughts of making the Olympic Team. He modestly describes himself as " a journeyman, at best." Balancing a career, wife, and three kids, Soucheck has never totally devoted himself to race walking. Still he's qualified and represented the United States on a number of international teams. Indeed, a year before the Olympic Trials he was not aiming to train for them. Instead, he qualified when he was asked by a friend to help pace him at the 40K Nationals to acheive the time standard needed for the trials. Soucheck qualifed for the trials that day and hoped his experience at the 2008 Olympic Trials would be better than his previous two attempts at the Trials. They ended in disqualification.

This year his strategy was to hang back as long as he could and "not do anything suicidal." His strategy paid off. He came though much better than expected claiming "the heat didn't quite kill me as much as he expected."
